UFC President Dana White has characterized the animosity surrounding the upcoming UFC 328 bout between Khamzat Chimaev and Sean Strickland as one of the most intense and bitter rivalries the sport has ever witnessed. Following a particularly heated press conference in Newark, New Jersey, White expressed his dismay at the level of personal animosity displayed by the middleweight champion and his challenger.

White, speaking to Nina Drama, remarked that while some fights maintain a level of respect between competitors, the Chimaev-Strickland dynamic has consistently deviated from that norm. He placed this particular feud among the top three most acrimonious in the promotion’s history, noting the significant escalation of tensions.

The friction between Chimaev and Strickland reached a physical point during the UFC 328 face-off at the Prudential Center. The staredown devolved into chaos when Chimaev made a kicking motion towards Strickland’s lower body, causing him to stumble back as security intervened. White, who had cautioned the fighters to maintain composure just moments prior, was in close proximity. Post-confrontation, Strickland took to X (formerly Twitter), asserting that the incident was precisely what he expected from his opponent, whom he deemed a coward.

The roots of this deep-seated animosity can be traced back to a sparring session in 2022. Following the session, Chimaev shared a video, claiming he had dominated weaker opponents, a narrative that emerged after Strickland accused Chimaev of strategically choosing sparring partners. What began as a training relationship has since transformed into a bitter personal feud, with both fighters resorting to disparaging remarks concerning each other’s heritage, political views, religious beliefs, and personal lives. Strickland has alluded to Chimaev’s Russian origins and his fight record associated with the UAE, while Chimaev has targeted Strickland’s difficult upbringing and his father’s history of abuse.

Religious undertones surfaced when Strickland controversially labeled Chimaev a “terrorist.” Chimaev responded with aggressive language, stating, “I am terrorist for him. I am going to take off his head. I am going to kill him.” Strickland countered by claiming he had avoided religious discourse until Chimaev introduced it, referring to him as a “dog” who should leave the country. Although Chimaev momentarily seemed to de-escalate with the statement “I’m not going to touch you,” the physical altercation followed Strickland’s defiant remark, “You ain’t going to do s***.”

Due to the volatile nature of their interactions throughout fight week, White has found it necessary to keep the fighters separated for much of the time. Chimaev has previously predicted Strickland’s demise within two days of their fight and has proclaimed himself to be Strickland’s superior, akin to a father figure in the cage. Strickland, however, has expressed a desire for Chimaev to engage in wrestling, asserting that he can out-wrestle him and thus prevent a potentially unengaging fight. Strickland earned his title shot following a third-round TKO victory over Anthony Hernandez in February. Chimaev enters the contest with an undefeated professional record of 15-0, including nine wins within the UFC, four of which were by submission.

This upcoming bout marks Khamzat Chimaev’s inaugural title defense. He previously secured the middleweight championship by defeating Dricus du Plessis, following impressive wins against Robert Whittaker and Kamaru Usman. Sean Strickland is aiming to reclaim the middleweight belt he lost to Dricus du Plessis in January 2024. Current betting odds heavily favor Chimaev, with odds of 6-to-1. However, Strickland is determined to employ psychological tactics to disrupt Chimaev’s confidence and upset the expectations. The five-round championship bout is poised to be the culmination of years of heated trash talk finally being settled within the Octagon.
