Andy Ruiz Jr. has publicly declared Tyson Fury to be the most overrated active boxer today. In a recent interview, Ruiz expressed his belief that Fury is not an exceptional fighter, despite his significant achievements in the sport. Ruiz specifically pointed to Wilder as the only truly strong opponent Fury has faced and defeated.
Despite Fury’s impressive 34-2-1 record, which includes victories over Wladimir Klitschko and Deontay Wilder in their trilogy, Ruiz maintains his assessment. He admitted there are other fighters he considers overrated but chose not to name them.
Ruiz sees a potential bout with Fury as an ideal test for himself and expressed enthusiasm for the possibility. “Yes. I’d love to fight him,” Ruiz stated. He also alluded to a past conversation where Fury had apparently inquired about fighting him, but the idea was dismissed by others as too risky for Fury at that time, leading to Fury’s eventual choice of Arslanbek Makhmudov for his comeback fight.
Outlining his strategy, Ruiz believes his speed, relentless pressure, and combination punching would prove too much for Fury. “The speed, the pressure and throwing combinations,” Ruiz explained. “You know, the head moves but the body stays there, so all my punches are going to be there in his chest, stomach, head, everywhere.” He feels confident that when he is in peak condition, he fights with ferocious intensity, likening himself to a “beast.”
Ruiz, famously known for his upset victory over Anthony Joshua in 2019 which secured him unified heavyweight titles, last competed in 2024. His professional record stands at 42-2 with 28 knockouts. While Fury possesses a significant height and reach advantage at 6’9″ with an 85-inch reach, Ruiz relies on his high volume of punches.
Discussions about a Fury-Ruiz matchup gain momentum amid speculation surrounding Anthony Joshua’s next fight. Ruiz has also expressed interest in a trilogy fight with Joshua, recalling his challenging performance in their 2019 rematch where he weighed in at nearly 300 pounds. Fury’s team opted for the undefeated Arslanbek Makhmudov (20-0, 18 KOs) for his upcoming return, rather than Ruiz. Boxing fans continue to debate whether Ruiz’s aggressive style and pressure could indeed disrupt Fury’s movement.
