Two elite British welterweights are set to face off in the main event of Cage Warriors 205, taking place in Glasgow. Defending champion Justin Burlinson will make his first title defense on enemy territory against the formidable Sean Clancy Jr.
The Comeback King: Justin Burlinson
Justin Burlinson, the reigning welterweight champion, secured his title in impressive fashion nearly a year ago against James Sheehan in Dublin. Now, he finds himself defending his championship in an opponent’s home crowd once again. Burlinson’s journey has been marked by resilience. In 2021, he suffered a first-round knockout loss on Dana White’s Contender Series against Yohan Lainesse, a setback that occurred early in his still-developing career at 6-0.
Despite the loss, Burlinson rebounded with a win, but faced another defeat in 2022 when he competed for the Cage Warriors 170lb belt for the first time against Rhys McKee. Since then, he has remained undefeated with a 100% finishing rate. Burlinson is known for his entertaining performances and demonstrated incredible grit in his title-winning fight against Sheehan, overcoming adversity to claim the belt dramatically.
Burlinson had another opportunity to step into the UFC spotlight at the end of 2025, traveling to Doha for the inaugural UFC Qatar event with hopes of securing a late call-up. However, the opportunity did not materialize. This weekend, Burlinson returns to Cage Warriors, aiming to earn his shot at the prestigious promotion in a more decisive manner.
Sean Clancy Jr.: Destined for UFC Gold?
At just 23 years old and fighting out of Paisley, Scotland, Sean Clancy Jr. is considered one of the hottest prospects in the sport. This Saturday, he aims to further fuel the intense hype surrounding him. With an undefeated record of 8-0 and a 100% finishing rate, mirroring the English champion, Clancy Jr. poses a threat in all facets of the game. His rapid striking combined with an aggressive grappling style makes him a strong contender for championship material.
The Scottish fighter has been on the radar for welterweight gold for some time. In December, he captured the interim belt with an exceptional performance. Following Burlinson’s unavailability at the end of 2025, Clancy Jr. faced experienced Dutchman Melvin van Suijdam for the interim title. He emerged victorious with a spectacular second-round knockout, courtesy of a powerful right and left hook combination.
Many believe this bout is not only for the unified Cage Warriors Welterweight Championship but also serves as a potential pathway to a contract with the UFC.
Who do you predict will emerge victorious and potentially earn a UFC contract?
