Islam Makhachev has weighed in on Conor McGregor’s imminent return to the UFC octagon. The Irish fighter is set to compete again after a five-year hiatus, facing Max Holloway in the main event of UFC 329 on July 11th. This highly anticipated rematch is scheduled for five rounds in the welterweight division.
Despite the historical animosity between McGregor and the Nurmagomedov camp, a thaw seems to be occurring in the relationship between McGregor and Makhachev. Following the UEFA Champions League Final, Makhachev was interviewed and asked for his opinion on McGregor’s comeback fight. He stated:
“It’s beneficial. A significant name for our sport. However, he faces a challenging opponent in Max Holloway. I believe Max has the capability to defeat him.”
Makhachev Preparing for August Title Defense
In the same interview, Islam Makhachev indicated that he would begin his training camp immediately after the UEFA Champions League final, with the intention of competing in August. When discussing potential opponents, the Russian fighter commented:
“I’ll head straight to camp after this. I’ll be ready in August. There are many contenders, but the top one is young Ian Garry. We still have a few others aiming for the belt, but I won’t relinquish it to anyone.”
Makhachev achieved welterweight championship status, becoming a two-division champion and reclaiming the number one pound-for-pound ranking at UFC 322 during his debut in the 170-pound division. However, he is yet to make his first defense of the title.
McGregor’s Ambition for the “Triple Crown”
Last year, in an interview with Bloody Elbow, Conor McGregor expressed admiration for Islam Makhachev following his double-division championship achievement. When questioned about a potential future bout with the Dagestani wrestling specialist, “The Notorious” responded:
“I am motivated, driven by myself, and I definitely want a shot at that belt. I absolutely want a shot at that 170-pound belt to pursue the triple crown. It would be a compelling fight, a good scrap. Southpaw versus southpaw. His performance was solid, and I commend him for having the courage to make the move up. So yes, I’m looking forward to it. Let’s see what unfolds. Let’s get back into the mix.”
