PFL MENA is set to host its “Pride of Arabia” event in Dubai on May 24th, featuring prominent Emirati fighters Mohammad Yahya and Zamzam Al Hammadi. This event marks PFL MENA’s inaugural show in Dubai and serves as a platform to showcase their vision for regional MMA on a grand stage within the Gulf. The event will take place at the Coca-Cola Arena in Dubai.
Dubai: A Crucial Hub for Arab Mixed Martial Arts
Dubai’s selection as the venue extends beyond logistical convenience; it holds significant weight in the MMA world. The UAE has a long-standing commitment to combat sports, fostering a rich culture from jiu-jitsu to major MMA promotions. However, for PFL MENA, Dubai represents more than just a location; it is a dynamic convergence point where diverse communities from across the region interact, reside, and share a passion for sports.
Jerome Mazet, General Manager of PFL MENA, emphasized this sentiment during an interview, referring to Dubai as “the capital city of the Arab world, where all the communities live.” An event in Dubai is not merely for the local population; it aims to resonate with a broader Arab audience that views Dubai as a central meeting place.
Mazet further connected this to the event’s composition: “This is a moment where communities come together and cheer for their local champions.” This philosophy underscores PFL MENA’s objective: to not only promote exciting fights but also to provide a legitimate regional stage for Arab MMA, distinct from imported productions. Dubai provides this unique setting, mirroring the diverse nationalities and backgrounds that characterize contemporary Arab sports culture.
Practically, Dubai stands out as one of the few cities in the region capable of hosting an event that feels simultaneously local and international. Fighters can proudly represent their nations while competing before an audience drawn from across the Arab world, creating an atmosphere akin to a regional gathering rather than a typical home event.
This approach aligns with PFL MENA’s ambition to establish a strong regional identity. “We need to be a regional league,” Mazet stated. “It’s really not just bringing the fights. It’s building the ecosystem around it that will make this industry sustainable.”
Crucially, PFL MENA prioritizes the regional fanbase over international viewership. “We don’t think of the American fan or the British fan when we do our events,” Mazet explained. “We think of the guy in Kuwait, in Riyadh, in Dubai.” This strategic focus ensures that the product is tailored to local tastes, with the intention of originating from the region and then expanding outwards, rather than adapting an existing international product.

Mazet believes that MMA in the Gulf has already achieved a more mainstream status compared to some Western markets. “In our region, because it is more mainstream, the positioning is more family-oriented, more community-oriented,” he noted, with Dubai perfectly embodying this characteristic.
Consequently, “Pride of Arabia” holds significance beyond its fight card. With Mohammad Yahya headlining and Zamzam Al Hammadi representing the new generation, all set against the backdrop of Dubai, PFL MENA aims to present an authentic regional MMA experience. If successful, the event will not only determine winners and losers but also significantly signal the future trajectory of Arab MMA.
