According to his close friend and training partner, top lightweight contender Arman Tsarukyan, Khamzat Chimaev is currently not planning a move to the light heavyweight division (205 pounds).
Following his recent title loss at UFC 328, Chimaev had initially considered a jump to the heavier weight class. However, Tsarukyan has revealed that Chimaev has since changed his mind and is now fully focused on a rematch with Sean Strickland to regain his former glory.
Speaking on the JAXXON Podcast, Tsarukyan stated that Chimaev, also known as “Borz,” is more motivated than ever and has decided to set aside his aspirations of becoming a two-division UFC champion for now, in order to challenge Strickland again.
“Khamzat wants to do the rematch. His head is ready to go, and he’s more motivated than before.”
Does Sean Strickland Want a Rematch with Khamzat Chimaev?
While Khamzat Chimaev is eager for an immediate rematch with Sean Strickland, the current two-time UFC middleweight champion has expressed a different sentiment.
Chimaev hopes to face Strickland in October in Abu Dhabi and has reportedly begun training after his UFC 328 loss. Strickland, however, after regaining the middleweight championship, told Full Send MMA that Chimaev needs to secure a couple of wins before earning another title shot.
“As of always you go get a couple W’s and I’ll see you again, that’s how it works. I truly believe ranking systems matter in the UFC and whenever they don’t, it belittles the sport. So go get a couple W’s and I’ll see you again.”
