UFC sensation Conor McGregor has shared insights into his preparation for his highly anticipated return to the octagon.
McGregor is set to make his comeback at UFC 329, facing Max Holloway in a rematch of their bout from over a decade ago. This welterweight clash is expected to suit the Irish fighter well.
After a five-year absence from the cage due to a leg break sustained in his trilogy fight against Dustin Poirier, there has been considerable speculation about McGregor’s performance upon his return.
In a recent interview, McGregor elaborated on his approach to this new phase of his career:
“With my increased experience in the sport, I now strategize by working backward from the most challenging situations,” he explained. “Having experienced a limb break in the octagon, I now have to have a plan for such an eventuality.
“While the perfect scenario involves a knockout with a powerful backhand and a roaring crowd, I also consider the worst-case scenarios. For instance, if my shoulder dislocates mid-round, what are my mechanisms for response? If my knee dislocates early on, what are my movements and reactions? Should I switch stances or go to the ground? I have a comprehensive set of responses for these adverse situations, not by dwelling on them, but simply by having them prepared.
“So, if my ankle, knee, or shoulder gives out, I know my response because the fight isn’t over. If you have a maneuver, you can endure, survive, and work towards victory.
“With my accumulated experience in fighting, I’ve learned to work from the worst-case scenario towards the best-case scenario, and then focus my preparation on achieving that ideal outcome. That’s my current mindset. I’ve anticipated every potential situation and have my responses ready for them.”
