Dustin Poirier, a veteran UFC competitor boasting an impressive record of 30 professional wins, has headlined numerous pay-per-view events and contended for championship titles. Despite a long and distinguished career, the 37-year-old American fighter recently disclosed that a specific bout was singularly responsible for his overnight rise to widespread stardom.

In a recent interview, Poirier surprisingly lauded his rival and one of UFC's biggest draws, Conor McGregor. While the relationship between "The Notorious" and "The Diamond" remains contentious, Poirier stated that it was their second encounter that permanently elevated his public profile and recognition.

Their initial confrontation in 2014 saw McGregor secure a first-round knockout victory over Poirier.

Years later, the two clashed again at UFC 257, where "The Diamond" avenged his earlier loss with a TKO victory over McGregor. They met for a third time later that same year at UFC 264. That bout concluded in the first round when McGregor sustained a leg injury, resulting in another TKO defeat.

During his recent discussion, Poirier reminisced about the fight and the pivotal moment that propelled him to stardom:

“I had been fighting for 19 years, but it wasn't until the Conor fight that my recognition truly transformed. Opportunities for seminars and appearances began to flow, even though I had already headlined numerous UFC events and contended for titles. It was McGregor's name that made the difference.”

Despite the enduring animosity between Conor McGregor and Dustin Poirier, the latter consistently acknowledges the Irishman's accomplishments within the UFC. During a previous podcast appearance, "The Diamond" shared his thoughts:

“Look, I love to talk trash on Conor, but if anyone possesses the ability to regroup, rekindle that passion and drive, and make a successful comeback, it's him. I'm not saying just anyone can, but this particular individual can. He's exceptional. He has something unique, but ultimately, only he can determine if he truly has another run in him when he looks at himself. However, if he believes it, then I believe he could achieve it.”

McGregor, who has been out of action for nearly four years, is reportedly eager to step back into the cage. Although his previously anticipated June 14 fight did not materialize, reports now suggest the former two-division UFC champion is slated to compete on the International Fight Week card in July. The 37-year-old has reportedly intensified his training, has been subject to extensive testing recently, and is diligently preparing for a significant return.
