Exclusive | Lukas Achterberg talks dominating the K-1 Grand Prix and future matchups

Lukas Achterberg, the new K-1 Grand Prix champion and holder of the silver belt, recently discussed his impressive and dominant performance in Japan. He secured the 90kg World Grand Prix title with a series of first-round knockouts, employing various techniques including a powerful left hook, a precise toe kick, and a devastating calf kick to mark a brutal debut at the sport's pinnacle.

Lukas Achterberg's Comeback from Injury and Staying in the Sport

Returning after a two-year hiatus prompted by his sole career loss in Senshi, Lukas Achterberg disclosed his initial intention to leave kickboxing. However, an offer to compete in the 2026 K-1 Grand Prix led him to reconsider and ultimately stay in the sport.

“My plan was actually to quit kickboxing. I was concentrating on MMA and made my debut last year, though a staph infection forced me to cancel a November fight.”

“Fighting in K-1 was always a dream for me. Being 29, I grew up in Germany watching K-1 legends on Eurosport. This was an opportunity I seized for myself and my career. When a fighter withdrew, I was offered a spot against Satari, and suddenly I was in the tournament. I saw it as a chance with everything to gain and nothing to lose.”

His foray into MMA was happily interrupted by the unexpected chance to achieve historic kickboxing glory, which he successfully claimed. Reflecting on the increasing popularity of the J-kick style, spearheaded by Japanese talents like Yuki Yoza, Achterberg shared insights into developing the diverse striking arsenal that led to his K-1 dominance.

“I spend a lot of time outside the ring studying fights. I maintain an open mind, believing there's always something new to learn from anyone. Given my height, I have to approach fighting uniquely compared to others.”

Asked about becoming only the second German fighter to win a Grand Prix—the other being Enriko Kehl—Achterberg responded with a hint of melancholy.

“That’s fantastic. It would be even better if more people in Germany recognized this achievement. Kickboxing isn't a major sport here, so media coverage is limited. Nevertheless, I love this sport and I'm immensely proud of myself.”

Now a celebrated champion beloved by kickboxing fans globally, particularly in Japan, Achterberg discussed a potential future bout with the current champion, the formidable Thian De Vries, with whom he has previously trained.

“I believe fans want to see the fight with Thian,” he stated. “Japanese media frequently asks about it, and we aim to deliver what the fans desire. I'm after the gold belt. I know Thian; we've trained together. He's a remarkable individual and his rapid ascent is truly impressive. But if a fight is what's next, then we'll do it. I'm prepared to face anyone, depending on what the matchmakers decide.”

Standing at 6'6", Achterberg is notably large even for the cruiserweight division. He entertained the prospect of a future move to heavyweight with enthusiasm.

“Absolutely,” he affirmed. “Eliminating weight cuts would be ideal for me. I'd aim for around 105kg at heavyweight, as I don't want to be excessively heavy, which wouldn't suit my fighting style. I regularly train with heavyweights, so I'm accustomed to it.”

With his strong presence established in Japan's K-1 scene and ONE Championship expanding its footprint in the country with the ONE Samurai series, Achterberg considered the prospect of facing elite ONE talent like Roman Kryklia and fellow Senshi veteran, the new heavyweight champion Samet Agdeve.

“That would be an excellent fight. He's a very skilled fighter—strong, heavy-handed, technically sound, and possesses a sharp eye.”

However, he firmly emphasized his current focus on his immediate career goals.

“But you have to think about the next fight first. Everything after that is just dreaming. I'm focused on what happens next.”

After overcoming a significant setback in his career, "The High Tower" has made a triumphant return, and the future appears incredibly promising for the German kickboxing star!
