UFC legend Randy Couture sustained serious injuries and was airlifted to a specialized burn center after a crash during practice at a race track in Kansas City.

The 62-year-old UFC Hall of Famer was preparing for his debut in the National Hot Rod Association (NHRA) this year when the significant accident occurred during a practice run on Tuesday. Couture`s injuries included first and second-degree burns, trauma, and smoke inhalation.

Following the crash, Couture was airlifted to a local burn center for treatment and is currently recovering there. Sources familiar with the situation confirmed his injuries on Wednesday, adding that the former UFC heavyweight and light heavyweight champion is expected to make a recovery.

The cause of the accident that led to Couture`s injuries has not yet been disclosed.

News of the crash was first reported by TMZ.

Couture had been practicing for several months with the goal of eventually competing in an NHRA race, continuing to expand the pursuits on his diverse resume.

Just weeks prior, Couture remarked in an interview that race car driving was a “completely different animal” compared to even competing in MMA, a sport where he is widely regarded as one of the greatest fighters ever.

He was quoted saying, “I’ve been a fan of racing for 12, 13 years. From up in the stands it looks really easy — oh they just go fast … it’s so much more involved.”

As one of only a select few two-division champions in UFC history, Couture moved into coaching, commentary, and acting following his fighting career. He established Xtreme Couture, a popular gym in Las Vegas, and currently serves on the PFL broadcast team while also appearing in various films and television productions.
