Social Security Administration Announces Food Assistance No Longer Reduces Monthly Benefits

Published

on

The Social Security Administration has announced a change benefiting millions of Americans who receive supplemental security income. Effective September 30th, food assistance will no longer reduce the monthly benefits of the recipients a group that includes adults and children with disabilities, blindness, or those 65 and older with minimal income.

This change, affecting approximately 7.4 million individuals, eliminates the previous practice of counting food aid as unearned income, which could decrease payments or affect eligibility. This update is expected to ease the financial burden on recipients, who, as one of the most food insecure groups in the country, have struggled under the pressure of high inflation and rising food costs. Future legislative efforts may further strengthen the supplemental security income by increasing asset limits, allowing beneficiaries to save towards a more secure financial future.
