Quinton “Rampage” Jackson, a prominent figure in mixed martial arts, once approached an unexpected individual for sparring assistance while preparing for one of the most significant fights of his career. As a former UFC Light Heavyweight Champion, Jackson consistently faced the elite competitors of his generation.
His storied career included a monumental fourth encounter with Wanderlei Silva, where he settled their rivalry`s score. Silva was just one among many legends with whom “Rampage” clashed. While his knockout victory over Silva might be considered his favorite, Jackson`s resume boasts several other contenders for that title. The 47-year-old recently shared intriguing details about his preparations for facing another iconic fighter whom he ultimately defeated twice.
Quinton `Rampage` Jackson`s Shocking Comparison of Herb Dean to Chuck Liddell
The name Herb Dean is undoubtedly familiar to any MMA enthusiast, given his regular presence inside the Octagon. Despite recent criticisms, this veteran official remains one of the sport`s most experienced referees. What many might not realize, however, is that Dean`s initial foray into the cage wasn`t as a referee; he competed as a professional fighter, compiling a 2-3 record between 2001 and 2007.
During a recent episode of the JAXXON PODCAST, Quinton “Rampage” Jackson stunned his co-hosts by revealing that he had approached Dean prior to his fight with Chuck Liddell.
“In MMA, it’s hard to find people to act like your opponent because I remember I wanted somebody that reminded me of Chuck Liddell and the only person I could think of was Herb Dean. And Herb Dean was like, ‘Nah, I’ve got to stay neutral. I can’t come help you train for your fight,`” Jackson recounted.
His co-hosts, including former UFC champion TJ Dillashaw, initially disbelieved Jackson until he provided context about Dean`s past as a fighter before transitioning to officiating. Jackson then reiterated his earnest desire for Dean`s assistance in preparing for “The Iceman.”
“I trained with Herb Dean years ago and I’ll tell you, listen when I say this, Herb Dean moves like Chuck Liddell. I sparred him years ago,” Jackson asserted.
Jackson`s Victories Over Chuck Liddell Without Dean`s Help
Despite his unusual request, Quinton “Rampage” Jackson ultimately didn`t require Herb Dean`s help to defeat Chuck Liddell. Jackson faced Liddell twice: first in Pride in 2003, and then again for the UFC Light Heavyweight title at UFC 75. In both encounters, “Rampage” stopped “The Iceman,” securing two of the most memorable wins of his career.
