Former Bellator lightweight title challenger Alexander Shabliy has accepted a six-month suspension issued by the United States Anti-Doping Agency (USADA). This ban comes after he tested positive for a prohibited substance during an out-of-competition drug test.

The suspension was officially announced by USADA officials on Wednesday.

According to a statement from USADA, Shabliy, who is 32 years old, tested positive for recombinant erythropoietin (rEPO). The positive sample was collected during an out-of-competition test performed on March 19, 2025. rEPO is listed under Peptide Hormones, Growth Factors, Related Substances, and Mimetics on the PFL Anti-Doping Policy (ADP) and Prohibited List, and is banned at all times.

Under Section 10.2 of the current PFL ADP, the standard period of ineligibility for the use of a prohibited substance is six months, although this can be extended up to one year in certain situations. However, USADA`s investigation found evidence suggesting Shabliy`s use was not deliberate, and he provided significant cooperation regarding the individual who administered the EPO. Consequently, Shabliy`s six-month period of ineligibility began on March 19, 2025, the date his positive sample was taken.

Based on the terms of his suspension, Shabliy will be eligible to return to competition after September 19, 2025.

Recombinant erythropoietin (rEPO) is banned for athletes at all times because this synthetic drug is known to increase red blood cell production and enhance oxygen-carrying capacity. These effects provide a significant advantage, particularly improving cardio and conditioning for fighters.

Shabliy, who now competes under the PFL banner, has not fought since September 2024, when he lost a decision to lightweight champion Usman Nurmagomedov. With this suspension, he is now required to remain out of competition until at least September 2025 before he can fight again.
