Electronic waste, also known as e-waste, is becoming an increasing problem across the globe, with Africa generating the least yet facing significant challenges in recycling. The continent’s lack of infrastructure and regulation for waste management has hindered the efforts to address the issue. The improper disposal and handling of waste pose significant health risks and environmental concerns, as hazardous substances can lead to soil and water contamination.

In Nairobi, Kenya, individuals risk their health by scavenging through waste at the dumpsites for recyclable materials to sell. Exposure to dangerous chemicals from electronic trash causes health problems, but for many, this work is their only source of income. Recycling centers in Nairobi offer a safer alternative, collecting and securely processing waste, yet the challenge remains vast.
