Bantamweight champion Merab Dvalishvili is gearing up for another historic feat, with one more fight scheduled before the year concludes. He is set to headline UFC 323 in December, marking the final pay-per-view card of the year. This fight comes a mere 63 days after his dominant title defense victory over Cory Sandhagen.
However, the Georgian sensation was taken by complete surprise when he learned he would be headlining this significant event. Promotional CEO Dana White confirmed a title fight double-header for UFC 323, fulfilling Dvalishvili`s wish, but the champion himself was unaware of his main event status until a live interview.

Dvalishvili`s Unanticipated Main Event Role
During an interview with Ariel Helwani, Dvalishvili reacted with genuine shock upon being informed of his headlining role. He candidly stated:
“I did not know this news — I had no idea, I promise. They [the UFC] never guarantee that you [will fight this opponent].”
At UFC 323, Dvalishvili, known for his formidable grappling, will rematch Russian star Petr Yan, whom he decisively defeated in 2023. This upcoming bout presents a unique opportunity for Dvalishvili to make history. By successfully defending his title for the fourth time in a single year, he aims to surpass fellow UFC 320 victor Alex Pereira and even former heavyweight champion Stipe Miocic, becoming the first fighter in UFC history to achieve this remarkable milestone.
Future Plans: Another Quick Turnaround
Despite being booked for his second fight in just over two months, Dvalishvili shows no signs of slowing down. The bantamweight kingpin is already eyeing a potential return to the octagon as early as March, merely 12 weeks after his December clash with Yan.
“I’m willing to fight also in March,” Dvalishvili affirmed, considering March a realistic timeframe rather than February`s Australia card. He further elaborated on his fighting philosophy:
“I’m not afraid to lose something, I’m a fighter. I know I’m not gonna win all of these fights, but listen, I love this, and like I said, when I have a fight, I’m more focused. I live a more healthy lifestyle and I wanna just keep improving.”
This statement highlights his unwavering passion for the sport and his commitment to continuous improvement, regardless of potential outcomes.
