Magomed Ankalaev appears to have a date and an opponent confirmed for his upcoming fight.
Ankalaev’s last appearance was in October 2025 at UFC 320, where his initial defense of the light heavyweight title resulted in a quick first-round TKO defeat against Alex Pereira in their rematch.
Following this loss, it was revealed that the 33-year-old Russian fighter had competed with a fractured rib, which he aggravated during the bout. He was sidelined afterwards, but after a nine-month recovery period, Ankalaev is now expected to return to the octagon.
Magomed Ankalaev Targeted for Bout Against Khalil Rountree Jr. at UFC Abu Dhabi Headliner
Reports indicate that Magomed Ankalaev is being targeted for a return fight against Khalil Rountree Jr., a former contender for the light heavyweight title. This matchup is anticipated to headline a UFC Abu Dhabi event scheduled for July 25th at the Etihad Arena in the United Arab Emirates.
The potential bout was initially reported by VestnikMMA on X.
Ankalaev also seemingly alluded to the confirmation of this matchup through several social media posts.
Prior to his defeat to Alex Pereira, Ankalaev had an impressive 14-fight undefeated streak. This streak notably included his unanimous decision victory over “Poatan” to capture the light heavyweight championship at UFC 313 in March 2025. His current UFC record stands at 12 wins, 2 losses, and 1 no-contest, with significant victories over opponents such as Aleksandar Rakić, Johnny Walker, and Thiago Santos.
Meanwhile, Khalil Rountree Jr. is set to compete again following a knockout loss to Jiri Prochazka at UFC 320. Before this setback, “The War Horse” had bounced back from his loss to Pereira at UFC 307 with a decisive, dominant unanimous decision win against Jamahal Hill at UFC Baku in June of the previous year.
Rountree Jr. has a UFC record of 10 wins and 7 losses, with one no-contest. His notable victories include wins over Anthony Smith, Dustin Jacoby, and Gokhan Saki.
