UFC icon Kamaru Usman has voiced his opinion regarding Justin Gaethje’s status as a significant underdog in his upcoming bout with Ilia Topuria.
The highly anticipated lightweight championship unification bout is set to headline UFC Freedom 250, featuring Justin Gaethje and Ilia Topuria battling it out on the White House lawn. Gaethje currently holds the interim lightweight title, while Topuria enters the contest with immense momentum, having recently secured a second UFC championship by defeating prominent fighters such as Alexander Volkanovski, Max Holloway, and Charles Oliveira via knockout.
Understandably, Topuria carries considerable momentum, yet Justin Gaethje is renowned for his resilience and will undoubtedly present a formidable challenge. Despite facing various hurdles, Gaethje has consistently delivered elite performances, solidifying his rightful place among the sport’s top contenders.
During a recent installment of his “Pound 4 Pound” podcast, co-hosted with Henry Cejudo, Kamaru Usman shared his perspective on the betting odds assigned to Justin Gaethje for the upcoming clash.
Kamaru Usman on Justin Gaethje’s Odds vs Ilia Topuria
Usman expressed his astonishment at the figures, stating, “These odds are crazy. They still list Justin as roughly a 4-1 underdog? What were his odds in his previous bout? He was also a 3-1 underdog then? Something absurd like that. Justin Gaethje has been the underdog.” He continued, “Regardless of who sets these odds, I sense a definite lack of respect. I experienced it myself when I was the underdog in my fight. That disrespect exists, but it’s part of the game. As professional athletes, we relish the opportunity to step in and silence our detractors, so I embrace it.”
While Topuria’s recent dominant victories undeniably justify his position as the favored fighter, underestimating ‘The Highlight’ has proven costly for many opponents in the past. Should ‘El Matador’ exhibit even a momentary lapse in focus, he might find himself regretting it.
Regardless of the odds, this matchup promises to be an electrifying spectacle that will undoubtedly captivate fans at the White House this summer.
