Preview Jack Della Maddalena Explains Disappointed Reaction During Islam Makhachev Fight

Jack Della Maddalena has finally revealed the true reason behind his visibly disheartened expression during his recent bout against Islam Makhachev.

Last year, “JDM” ascended to the 170-pound championship by defeating Belal Muhammad, a training partner and close associate of Makhachev. This victory prompted Makhachev to relinquish his lightweight title and transition to the welterweight division. However, Della Maddalena’s championship reign was brief, as he was dethroned by Makhachev during the latter’s welterweight debut at UFC 322.

The Dagestani grappling phenom demonstrated overwhelming control and skill against “JDM.” He maintained control for an impressive 19 minutes and 10 seconds, executed 4 successful takedowns, and landed a total of 140 strikes, ultimately securing a unanimous decision victory.

In the later championship rounds, Della Maddalena’s disappointment was evident. Commentators and fans alike speculated that he might have sustained an injury, which could explain his struggles to defend takedowns and return to his feet. Even his coach, prior to the final round, reportedly instructed “JDM” to “take that f***ing sad look off his face” if he intended to avoid losing his title and give his all in the last five minutes.

In a recent interview, Jack Della Maddalena admitted that his somber demeanor stemmed from a feeling of underperforming at UFC 322. He stated he couldn’t execute his game plan effectively, leading to his disappointed expression and the perception that he was physically and mentally drained in the later stages of the fight. Della Maddalena explained, “It was just a bit of disappointment for not being able to do what I wanted to do, knowing I was having a poor performance. I look back on it and there’s things I should’ve been doing more of.”

Jack Della Maddalena Confident Ahead of Next Opponent

Jack Della Maddalena is eager for a rematch with Islam Makhachev in the near future, aiming to reclaim the title he lost at UFC 322.

For now, to secure another shot at the championship, “JDM” is set to face powerful knockout artist Carlos Prates at UFC Perth on May 2. Della Maddalena expressed confidence in his abilities, believing he possesses the skills to “outclass” “The Nightmare.” He remarked, “He’s [Carlos Prates] a fan favorite for good reason. He’s an exciting guy. Good striking battle against two of the top contenders. I feel like I’ve got the skillset to beat him. I feel like I can outclass him.”
