Even though Islam Makhachev is widely recognized as one of the most dominant wrestlers and grapplers in UFC history, he has reportedly received advice to refine his skills in this area.
A surprising announcement was made last week: Islam Makhachev has relinquished his lightweight championship and will now target the welterweight title, challenging Jack Della Maddalena.
Before the UFC 315 main event, Makhachev had stated his intention to fight the winner, and Della Maddalena subsequently secured the welterweight title with a dominant performance.
Immediately after Della Maddalena`s victory, Makhachev issued a challenge, igniting a rivalry between the two.
Wrestling Focus Advised for Makhachev Before Della Maddalena Bout
The date for the welterweight title fight between Islam Makhachev and the new champion has not been set yet, though an October event in Abu Dhabi is rumored to be the target.
A key element of Della Maddalena`s victory over Belal Muhammad was his impressive takedown defense, successfully defending against most of Muhammad`s attempts.
This strong defense has led Makhachev`s longtime friend and training partner, Daniel Cormier, to suggest that Islam should focus on his wrestling, even given his established dominance in the area.
On a recent episode of Good Guy/Bad Guy, Cormier commented, “Islam vs Jack is going to be a great fight, especially considering how Jack defended takedowns and how Islam had some difficulty taking down Dustin Poirier.” He added, “He couldn`t take him down as easily as he has others, so I believe Makhachev really needs to hone his wrestling for a fighter like Jack Della Maddalena, who demonstrated excellent takedown defense and also possesses strong boxing, particularly in close quarters.”

Makhachev`s Striking Prowess Highlighted by KO Win Over Volkanovski
While Della Maddalena is often seen as having the striking advantage, Makhachev has demonstrated elite striking abilities throughout his UFC career.
This was notably evident in his brutal first-round head kick knockout win against Alexander Volkanovski in their UFC 294 rematch, which impressed many fans.
Della Maddalena`s striking primarily focuses on boxing, while Makhachev effectively utilizes kicks and a strong Thai clinch in his offensive strategy.
