Gina Carano on the Night She Quit Drinking and Walked Into the Gym
Gina Carano attributes her successful fighting career to her decision to abandon a heavy party lifestyle. This same determination is now propelling her toward a highly anticipated return to MMA, facing Ronda Rousey later this year on Netflix.
Reflecting on her youth, Carano described a turbulent and disorderly adolescence marked by late-90s grunge culture and frequent high school parties. She recounted graduating in 2000 and seeking excitement with friends, consuming large bottles of Olde English and viewing this period as an idyllic past.
She credits her older sister, a "free spirit" just 18 months her senior, for influencing this phase, as her sister's bedroom window was often open, signaling she had already slipped out to shows and parties.
Carano confessed to idolizing her sister, emulating her every move. This meant immersing herself in mosh pits and punk shows, often opting to sneak out for a night of revelry rather than attending practice. She suggested that while this period temporarily sidelined her natural competitive drive, it ultimately didn't diminish the intense competitive spirit that would later define her career in Muay Thai and MMA.
The Pivotal Olde English Bet That Transformed Gina Carano's Life
The crucial turning point, according to Carano, emerged through her then-boyfriend, Kevin Ross, who later became a renowned Muay Thai champion. She explained that Ross, seeking a new direction, encouraged her to start training at a time when both were heavy drinkers and alcohol was central to their social interactions.
During an interview, Carano recounted how Ross placed a bottle of Olde English before her, noting there was a small amount remaining. He then proposed a wager: if she finished the drink and committed to Muay Thai training, he would give her money for it:
“And there was probably this much left and I’ll give you money to start Muay Thai. And it was a hard decision because we were drinking pretty heavily back then and Kevin put it down… So, I think that’s when he fell in love with me, when I took the Olde English back and I downed it and he was like, ‘I’m in love.’”
Carano emphasized that the essence of fighting never truly departed from her, even during her prolonged absence from competition. She likened it to an persistent "bug" within her system:
“Once the bug gets in you, you’re just like, I need that again, you know, which is why we’re here. Once you’re a fighter, it never leaves. It never went away. So after all these years, people are like, ‘Oh, would you ever come back?’ I never said no. You’ll never see me say no in an interview. ‘No, I’ll never come back.’ It always stayed a part of my brain.”
This ingrained mindset clarifies why, after more than a decade away from MMA following a professional record of 7–1, Carano ultimately agreed to the long-speculated dream matchup: Ronda Rousey versus Gina Carano.
Anticipated Showdown: Rousey vs. Carano Confirmed for Netflix
Netflix, in collaboration with Most Valuable Promotions (MVP), has officially announced that Ronda Rousey and Gina Carano will face off on May 16, 2026. The featherweight bout, contested at 145 pounds under the Unified Rules of MMA, will take place at the Intuit Dome in Los Angeles. This event marks Netflix's inaugural live MMA card, offering the stream to subscribers at no additional charge, set within a hexagonal cage in the over 18,000-seat arena.
Rousey, a former UFC bantamweight champion and Olympic judo medalist, last competed in MMA in 2016, bringing a 12–2 record to this contest, which includes nine submission victories and three knockouts. Carano, whose last professional MMA fight was in 2009, holds a 7–1 record and is celebrated as a pivotal figure in the nascent stages of women's MMA in the United States.
