Chael Sonnen Explains What May Push Michael Chandler to Retire in 2026

UFC Hall of Famer Chael Sonnen has shared his insights on what could prompt Michael Chandler to consider retirement by 2026.

Chandler is set to face Mauricio Ruffy at UFC Freedom 250 on June 14, an event reportedly taking place on the South Lawn of the White House. "Iron" Chandler had initially sought a bout with Conor McGregor to conclude their rivalry from The Ultimate Fighter 31. However, UFC President Dana White reportedly shifted plans, seemingly ruling out a McGregor vs. Chandler fight for 2026.

Chandler, currently enduring a three-fight losing streak and having lost five of his last six UFC appearances, faces a formidable and rising knockout artist in Ruffy. Betting odds already suggest a challenging path for Chandler against the 29-year-old Brazilian.

Chael Sonnen on What Might Force Michael Chandler to Retire

In a recent YouTube video, Chael Sonnen posited that a loss to Mauricio Ruffy at UFC Freedom 250 could compel Chandler to hang up his gloves. Sonnen highlighted that while Chandler, at 38 or 39, still harbors ambitions of becoming a UFC champion, a fourth consecutive defeat, combined with his age, makes this goal increasingly unrealistic – a "pipe dream," as he put it.

Sonnen elaborated on his reasoning:

“Chandler will retire if Ruffy beats him. He likely will, and I do not know if it will necessarily be his choice. Chandler is now 38 years old. Chandler is also gainfully employed by Paramount and is going to be part of the announcing team. And should he lose a fight, that would probably just be a point in Chandler’s career. Chandler’s one of those guys who still wants to be a world champion. So if he gets confronted with that’s just not in your future… He likely would say, ‘Fair enough. Give my spot to somebody else.'”

Sonnen suggests that if Chandler faces the stark reality that his championship aspirations are no longer viable, he would likely accept it and step aside.
