Alexander Volkanovski questions the process behind deciding his UFC title contenders
UFC featherweight champion Alexander Volkanovski has openly voiced his concerns regarding the promotion's method for selecting his upcoming title challengers.
Widely recognized as one of the sport's elite pound-for-pound fighters, Volkanovski, despite being 37 years old, continues to dominate his division, most recently securing consecutive victories against Diego Lopes. Following UFC London, an undefeated Movsar Evloev appears to be the frontrunner for Volkanovski's next defense, though Jean Silva has also been mentioned as a potential opponent.
It seems the UFC might be deviating from the established path of presenting Alexander Volkanovski with clear, undisputed number-one contenders. This strategy is one that the champion himself has openly expressed disapproval of.
Volkanovski candidly shared his thoughts on the promotion's approach and who he believes should logically be his next opponent in a recent video posted on his YouTube channel.
Volkanovski Challenges UFC's Contender System
"Everyone knows the kind of champion I am," Volkanovski stated. "How many times can I keep avoiding the true No. 1 contender? Evloev was already ranked No. 1 and just defeated the No. 3 contender. Lopes, ranked No. 2, I've already faced twice. These were essentially the top two contenders, and they had to compete, producing a clear winner. That winner is undoubtedly Movsar. I'm a straightforward champion; I always want to fight the best."
He continued, "Even if the UFC were to push someone like Silva, I'd accept it, but at some point, we have to question the rationale. I am highly confident I can defeat all these guys: Silva, Lerone Murphy, Movsar, and of course, Lopes. My focus is always on facing the best. If we talk about my legacy, who should I fight? I want to face the undefeated fighter who has overcome all the top contenders because I know a victory over such an opponent will significantly enhance my record due to their unblemished record and strong wins. I’m confident that fighter will continue to succeed afterward, ensuring that my win against them remains impactful over time."
