Prospects of Alex Pereira vs. Jon Jones at White House Remain Alive
UFC President Dana White recently confirmed Alex Pereira's decision to relinquish his light heavyweight championship. Pereira aims to move up a division, seeking to become a three-division titleholder.
A former UFC middleweight champion and two-time light heavyweight titleist, Pereira has openly expressed his ambition for a third belt since reclaiming the 205-pound throne last year by defeating Magomed Ankalaev in a rematch at UFC 320.
With his official ascent to the heavyweight division, speculation points to potential clashes with either Ciryl Gane or Jon Jones. Pereira could vie for an interim 265-pound title or even the undisputed championship, should current titleholder Tom Aspinall vacate the belt.
MMA Insider Suggests Alex Pereira vs. Jon Jones on June 14 is a Possibility
Prominent MMA insider Ariel Helwani has revealed on his show that discussions have taken place regarding a potential heavyweight bout between "Poatan" (Alex Pereira) and Jon Jones for a proposed White House event.
Helwani believes that a Jones vs. Pereira showdown could materialize on June 14. If not, Pereira is expected to face Ciryl Gane for an interim or vacant heavyweight title.
Helwani stated, "There have been some talks of him [Alex Pereira] fighting Jon Jones, and there have been talks of him fighting Jon Jones on the White House Card… Jon Jones on the White House card is not dead… There have been talks of this. Jon Jones vs. Alex Pereira at heavyweight."
He further added that a significant fight is on the horizon for "Poatan." If the fight with Jones doesn't happen, Pereira will pursue either an interim or undisputed/vacant championship against Gane. "Alex Pereira wants to make history. Now the only thing bigger than becoming a three-division champion is being the first guy to beat Jon Jones. He wants that. If he can’t get that, he’s fighting for interim or undisputed/vacant gold…. A big fight is coming for Alex Pereira."
Both "Bones" Jones and Pereira have expressed interest in facing each other. However, Dana White has previously voiced reservations about Jones fighting at the White House, particularly after Jones's past decisions regarding the heavyweight division.
Despite this, Jon Jones has reiterated his commitment to fighting on the June 14 card, confirming that a recent diagnosis of arthritis in his left hip will not deter him from competing on the South Lawn.
Meanwhile, Dana White announced yesterday that details for the White House event's fights will be revealed next week. Fans eagerly await confirmation on whether Jones and Pereira will indeed square off, and if so, what title—interim, undisputed, or a unique White House belt—will be on the line.
