Former UFC Challenger Predicts Khamzat Chimaev Would Dominate Sean Strickland
A former UFC light heavyweight title contender suggests that Sean Strickland would pose little challenge to Khamzat Chimaev in a potential bout.
While Chimaev is anticipated to make his first middleweight title defense against the #2 ranked contender Nassourdine Imavov, speculation has grown around a different opponent. Following Sean Strickland's third-round victory over Anthony Hernandez at UFC Houston recently, which strengthened his claim for a title opportunity, persistent rumors have emerged about "Tarzan" potentially facing Chimaev next.
Khalil Rountree Jr., a light heavyweight who has trained with Chimaev (also known as "Borz"), recently shared his thoughts on the rumored matchup between Chimaev and Strickland.
Rountree Jr. first praised Chimaev's dominant showing at UFC 319, where the 31-year-old effectively controlled Dricus du Plessis for over 21 minutes, landed an impressive 529 total strikes, executed 12 takedowns, and secured a comfortable unanimous decision to claim the middleweight title.
Describing the UFC 319 main event as a thoroughly one-sided contest, Rountree Jr. speculated that Strickland would suffer a similar outcome if he were to face Chimaev. Speaking on the Jaxxon Podcast, Rountree Jr. elaborated:
“Many online commentators have criticized Khamzat for 'laying' on DDP for an extended period. However, from my perspective, it wasn't just 'laying.' He effectively neutralized DDP, preventing him from doing anything. When Khamzat fights, it's sheer domination. If a champion cannot escape from the ground, it reveals significant weaknesses in their skillset. I anticipate a fight against Strickland would unfold in a very similar fashion.”
Khamzat Chimaev Expresses Readiness to Face Sean Strickland
Responding to a fan on X (formerly Twitter), Khamzat Chimaev recently confirmed he is not injured and is awaiting a matchup with Sean Strickland. The Chechen-born Emirati fighter stated simply:
“No I waiting for strikiland”
Strickland promptly responded to "Borz" with a post containing a fist emoji and a U.S. flag emoji, signaling his acceptance.
