Diego Lopes Considers Lightweight Move After Featherweight Title Challenges
UFC featherweight contender Diego Lopes is actively exploring a transition to the lightweight division (155 pounds) after two attempts to capture the 145-pound championship ended in defeat.
Lopes first vied for the featherweight title at UFC 314 in 2025, facing Alexander Volkanovski. This opportunity arose following Ilia Topuria's decision to vacate the championship and move up a weight class. However, Lopes was unable to claim the belt, as the more seasoned Australian opponent consistently outmaneuvered him, executing a well-rounded game plan to secure his status as a two-time UFC featherweight champion.
In 2026, the UFC granted Lopes another shot at the 145-pound throne. This came after his dominant knockout victory over Jean Silva, which brought him back to winning form and earned him a title rematch, bypassing other deserving contenders.
Lopes squared off against "The Great" Volkanovski once more at UFC 325 earlier this year. The rematch unfolded similarly to their initial encounter, with Volkanovski again employing a consistent strategy to comfortably defeat Diego Lopes by unanimous decision.
Diego Lopes Hints at Move to 155 Pounds
Following two unsuccessful bids for the featherweight title, Diego Lopes has indicated a potential move up to 155 pounds, acknowledging that a third immediate opportunity for the 145-pound championship seems unlikely. He commented on his thought process:
"A third title shot would be difficult because I’ve already lost two, so we’re analyzing whether I stay in the category or try to fight at a higher weight."
He further elaborated on his long-term considerations, stating:
"It's something I have actually been thinking about for a while now… I have already been talking with the people closest to me, and yes, it's definitely a possibility. But we also have to see what the UFC's plans are… So first, I want to sit down, talk to the UFC, see what they have in mind for me, and see what they will tell me. Then we will also give them our opinion from there. But yes, moving up a division is definitely a possibility."
