AI-Powered App Offers Diagnosis of Ear Infections While Reducing Antibiotic Over Prescription for Kids

Published

on

Parents across the world are all too familiar with how painful ear infections can be for their children. About 70 percent of children develop an ear infection before the age of one. They are often given more than one round of antibiotics which can create an unhealthy cycle of reoccurring infections. Now, there is a tool for an easy diagnosis.

An AI-powered app developed by physicians at the University of Pittsburgh in the United States can diagnose ear infections via a smartphone. The complete AI app works by looking at a video of a patient’s eardrum and assessing its shape, position, color, and translucency to make a diagnosis. Inside the ear, signs of an infected eardrum appear as a bulging shape, akin to a bagel with its notable concave center.

This app can easily identify when the ear is infected. Results have shown it is 93 percent accurate, and this can help doctors reduce overprescribing antibiotics. This technology can also serve as a digital record for the individual when it is stored in their phone. The developers are hopeful this ai solution can be used in clinics to diagnose patients more accurately. Parents will be able to download the app at home on their smartphones and help their children.
