Afghanistan Imposes Severe Limits on Education as Females Are Barred From School

In Afghanistan, the Taliban’s ban on girls’ education beyond the sixth grade has left more than 1 million female students unable to attend school, starting this Wednesday. This exclusion marks Afghanistan as the sole nation enforcing severe limits on female education. Before the Taliban’s takeover, 5 million children, primarily girls, were already out of school due to insufficient facilities, among other reasons.  The new academic year began without the presence of female students or journalists at the opening ceremony, as women were also excluded from this event.

The emphasis on religious over secular education and the restriction of women from teaching professions have drastically affected the quality of education and student attendance. These strict regulations have affected not only girls but boys as well, with reports of declining attendance due to a lack of qualified teachers and the introduction of a regressive curriculum.
